David Lord – Chairman

Highlands College is a special place to learn and work. The College and University welcomes thousands of people every year into its workshops, classrooms and offices with the sole mission of harnessing the power of education to transform lives. With the commitment of our dedicated lecturers and support staff, the Board of Governors, the Foundation, and our Sponsors we aspire to meet the needs and ambitions of islanders by being responsive and creative; anticipating future education and skills demands.

We play a central role in meeting the needs of the economy by upskilling the current workforce and creating a suitably qualified one for the future. Many of our
old students come back to volunteer their time and contribute to the College and The Foundation or become one of our Partners, financially supporting, sharing expertise or making opportunities within their chosen profession.

On behalf of Highlands College Foundation, I hope that your organisation will consider becoming a Foundation Partner and join us in “Transforming Lives”.

In 1894, on the site known as Highlands, the French Jesuit training school, ‘NotreDame de Bon Secours’, was established. The site in St Saviour was originally used to train sailors for the French navy but following World War I the site was purchased from the Jesuits by another French group, ‘The Brothers of Christian’, who set up a missionary school.

During the Second World War, Jersey was occupied by the Germans and the site was used to house occupying forces from 1941 until 1945 after which it returned to its previous use. Meanwhile, throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s the States of Jersey established a College of Further Education in several different buildings across St Helier.

By 1970 the demand for missionaries had fallen away and so the Brother of Christian Instruction sold the Highlands site to the States of Jersey and the Highlands College of Further Education was born. Highlands College of Further and Higher Education is at the very centre of the Island’s community.

Each year we provide education for over 700 school leavers, 900 adults on part-time work-based learning including apprenticeships, 200 higher education students, 2000 adults on leisure courses and 600 students on professional development programmes.

Soroptimist International Jersey STEM Bursaries for Girls

Soroptimist International Jersey is delighted to be the first organisation to offer bursaries through the new Highlands Foundation.

SI Jersey has been committed to making the Island a more equal place by educating and empowering women, and supplies a global voice for women with special consultative status at the UN.

Although the importance for businesses to diversify their workforce is gradually being accepted, the reality is that girls are still not believing a career in
a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subject is for them. This fact has prompted many discussions in the Soroptimist world and our Club believed it is of such importance that we decided to do something about it.

Three bursaries of £1,500 are now on offer to girls who enter into one of six technical areas of study
in Highlands College Sixth Form: Automotive Studies; Building Services; Building Trades; Digital Games Development; Information Technology; and Mechanical Engineering and Welding. It is hoped that the bursaries will encourage more female students
to enter into fields that have historically been male dominated.

We very much look forward to continuing this partnership with Highlands College over the years to come.

~ Catherine Kirby,
President, Soroptimist International Jersey

Garenne: Helping to Build a Better Future for Jersey

The Garenne Construction Group are very proud to have developed an effective strategic partnership with Highlands College Construction Faculty. The primary goal of this partnership is to develop an external pipeline of talent to meet the construction industry’s current and future needs.

CEO of Garenne Channel Islands, Marc Burton, has an ongoing relationship with the College having sat on the Board of Governors for a number of years, It is this enriched partnership that is helping to make a positive impact on the lives of many local students.

Working with the College, Garenne helped to design a clear and concise construction career pathway to support students as they navigate their way through the industry. Additionally, the Garenne group employs and supports many apprentices as they undertake vocational training. This enables them not only to earn while they learn, but also to access meaningful opportunities to apply their learning in a work environment.

The group’s financial support has helped to fund new courses, to purchase essential equipment, and has enabled students to gain off-Island experiences.

“We are looking to invest in our future talent as we believe there will be significant opportunities in the next 5-10 years. Highlands College is such a valuable asset to the Island and we are keen to continue our partnership with them to ensure that we continue to offer on-Island training and employ locally”.
